Thomas Muller è uno dei pionieri della techno made in Paris, città dove è nato e cresciuto musicalmente insieme agli amici di sempre, Paul Ritch e Okain. Si trasferisce a Berlino nel 2007 quando Ellen Allien, boss della leggendaria BPitch Control, lo invita a far parte della squadra.

Da allora ha costantemente migliorato il suo modo di fare musica, influenzato dalla tipica impronta stilistica che caratterizza l’etichetta, dimostrando di essere un produttore prolifico, all’avanguardia e di meritare il suo posto nella nave madre.

 

Ad aprile uscirà una sua traccia nella compilation BPitch “Where the Wind Blows” e nel frattempo sta lavorando al suo prossimo Ep, di cui purtroppo ha potuto svelare poco.

 

 

Una carriera trascorsa tra Parigi, Berlino, i sentimenti per la musica e ancora molti progetti per il futuro.

Ciao Thomas! Cominciamo da Parigi la tua città natale. Com’è oggi la situazione clubbing e del panorama elettronico in generale nella capitale francese? 

Ciao Polpetta Mag, prima di tutto voglio ringraziarvi per quest’intervista.

Dunque, sono nato e cresciuto a Parigi, e qui ho partecipato ai miei primi parties tra il 2001 e il 2006. Ho vissuto il periodo in cui la techno è cresciuta qui in club come Elysee Montmartre, Pulp, l’ Enfer.. sono tutti chiusi ora. Era il periodo degli after; penso che l’after sia una buona rappresentazione della situazione clubbing in una città. Prima che mi trasferissi a Berlino, sei anni fa, non esistevano quasi più…

Oggi invece ce ne sono in abbondanza. Abbiamo una nuova generazione di promoters e club: Concrete, Weather, Sundae, Cirque du Paradis, Showcase, Maxim’s, Social Clubs, Villette Enchantée, Malibu, Pigallion, Rouge! L’elenco è davvero lungo e pensa, questi club non esistevano prima o hanno cambiato nome probabilmente perché hanno cambiato proprietario e direzione artistica in 6 anni.

Non ho nominato il Rex semplicemente perché è una leggenda e non ha mai avuto periodi di crisi.

Invece vivi a Berlino da diversi anni ormai. Pensi che sia cambiato qualcosa nella capitale della Techno da quando ti sei trasferito a oggi?

La scena techno è in continua crescita qui. Per esempio, quando sono arrivato c’erano pochi francesi, oggi invece è normale trovare stranieri ovunque in giro per la città; è diventata la capitale della techno e chiunque voglia avere un’idea di cosa sia veramente la techno viene a Berlino! Penso che non sia sempre stato così, soprattutto per quanto riguarda i prezzi. Noi stranieri abbiamo più soldi e i prezzi sono saliti per causa nostra. Non so come Berlino gestirà la cosa in futuro.

Certo non posso criticare la situazione turistica, perché Berlino è come una musa e io mi sono nutrito delle sue influenze.

Cosa significa per te in quanto artista far parte di un vero e proprio impero culturale quale è la BPitch Control?

E’ meraviglioso, credo non ci sia nessun etichetta migliore della BPitch Control.. è come far perte della British Royal Family =)

Qual’è il concetto che sta dietro al progetto BPitch Control? Che requisiti bisogna avere per far parte di questa famiglia? 

Penso che le idee cambino a seconda dello stato d’animo di Ellen ed è lo stesso per chi viene invitato a far parte della squadra. Quando fu il mio turno Ellen stava cercando un artista giovane e straniero.

Com’è cambiato il tuo modo di fare musica dai tuoi primi dischi a oggi?

A dir la verità non è cambiato un gran che, è ancora molto digitale, solo che i programmi e gli strumenti sono migliori oggi rispetto al passato. Il modo attraverso cui faccio musica è lo stesso, ma esprimo aspetti di me differenti, diverse emozioni o sentimenti. Penso che in un’intera carriera devi imparare come fare musica, ma bisogna anche capire qual’è il ruolo che rivesti come artista.

So che stai lavorando a un nuovo EP. Vuoi anticiparci qualche notizia in esclusiva, di cosa si tratta e cosa ci aspetta?  

Meno minimal, più musicale… meno compromessi e più completo.

Raccontaci del tuo rapporto con Paul Ritch e Okain. So che siete amici da sempre e siete cresciuti insieme professionalmente.

Ho cominciato a fare musica quando ci siamo promessi di scegliere questo stile di vita e viverlo insieme. E’ stato più o meno 11 anni fa… bè siamo cresciuti.

Ad aprile uscirà una compilation BPitch “Where the Wind Blows”, che si propone di promuovere le possibili tendenze future dell’etichetta. Secondo te quali sono i trend attuali per quanto riguarda la musica? 

Credo che un artista dovrebbe essere libero di fare la musica che preferisce e senza seguire le mode. Ora si sta andando in tutte le direzioni nello stesso momento, forse stiamo passando un periodo di libertà nell’arte! Penso anche che sia dovuto alla crisi economica e alle tecnologie digitali.

C’è qualcosa che cambieresti o miglioreresti nel panorama elettronico del momento?

Ora sono concentrato solo sulla mia musica, Dj set, live e produzioni. Penso che la maggior parte dei problemi del mondo elettronico siano dovuti alla politica e alle leggi.

Quando avrò più tempo mi piacerebbe essere parte di questo ramo non solo come artista, ma anche per creare nuovi progetti che possano difendere la scena elettronica.

Il disco che suoni più spesso nell’ultimo periodo? 

Phantom Ghost – The shadow ” Im schutt ” (3) di Pantha Du Prince.

Il miglior party in cui ricordi di aver suonato, e invece la peggiore nottata della tua carriera?

La festa al Rex Club questo mese è stata fantastica, con Paul Ritch e Okain. Davvero indimenticabile.

Al momento mi manca molto il Berghain, risposta classica, ma molto vera! Qui faremo uno showcase della BPitch Control il 6 luglio, non vedo l’ora!

I momenti peggiori sto cercando di dimenticarli =).

Prossimi club o festival dove ti troveremo? 

Sto suonando spesso a Parigi ultimamente; ho in programma qualche data con Ellen Allien a Londra in un party di Derren Smart! Si occupa del noto TBar di Londra e altri eventi molto importanti. Andrò al Berghain e molto altro.. il calendario completo lo trovate sulla mia fanpage di facebook.

Hi Thomas! Let’s start from Paris, your home town. How is the clubbing and electronic scene in the French capital nowadays?

Hi Polpetta! First of all l’d like to thanks you for this interview .

I’ve been growing up in Paris , born there , i did my first parties in Paris , 2001>2006 , i saw the techno becoming huge here ,  , with clubs like Elysee Montmartre , Pulp , l’Enfer , club closed now , This time was the time of After hours, After hours is a good representation of the club scene’s situation . Before living to Berlin , 6 years ago , they was almost no after hours anymore …

Today you have plenty of after hours ! There is a new generation of promoters and clubs, Concrete , Weather , Sundae , Cirque Paradis , Showcase ,  Maxim’s , Social Clubs , Villette enchantée , Malibu , Pigallion , Rouge ! It’s a lot of names , and imagine, those clubs did not exist before or have been rename probably because the owner changed or the artist direction changed at least , in 6 years .

It’s full almost every where , almost every nights.

Rex club is a legend , never went down but they’ve been through hard time in the Parisian techno scene i think!

You have been living in Berlin for a while now. Have you seen any changes in the Techno capital since you moved there?

The techno scene is growing a lot . When i arrived they was just few french , today it’s normal to meet foreigners everywhere around the capital , it became the techno capital and anyone who want to get an idea of what is techno is going there ! I believe it’s not always been like that , especially the rent is rising and creating problem because . us , foreigner have more money and prices are rising because us . I don’t know how Berlin is going to manage that in the future .

We cant blame the tourism situation because Berlin is a Muse and i’ve been feeding my self from its influences !

How does it feel as an artist to be part of a cultural empire like BPitch Control?

It feels amazing , there is almost no better label than Bpitch control , its like being a member of the British royal family =)

What kind of concept is behind BPitch Control? What are the requirement to be part of the family?

I think the concept is changing with ellen’s mood , and it’s the same about what is required to be invite to join the team , At my time , Ellen was looking for young and foreigner artist .

How has your way of doing music today changed from the early days?

The Way i make music didn’t change so much , still very digital , the plugs are just better today .

The way is the same but i’m expressing a different aspect of my self today , different emotions or feelings , I think. in one carrier, you have to learn how to make music, but also you have to learn what is your role as an artist. I kept my trippy vibe but i’ve change few differnets things the last 6 years .

I know you are working on a new EP. Would you like to give us some anticipation, what can we expect from your new project?

Less minimal , more musical , less compromise , more full on !

Tell us about your friendship with Paul Ritch and Okain. I know you have been friends for a long time and that you have grown professionaly together, right?

I started to make music because we made a promise to our self to choose this way of living together . It’s been 11 years ago . We grew up !

A new BPitch compilation will be released in March, named “Where the Wind Blows” that offers to promote possible future trend of the label. What do you believe is the current trend regarding music?

I think artist are free to do the music they like more and more and not following the hype. It’s going in every direction at the same time , maybe we are living a period of art freedom ! I think, this is the result of an economic crise and the large consequence of the digital technologies ( internet , hacked plugs , downloading platforms )

Would you change or improve something in the electronic music scene at the moment?

I’m really focus on my own music at the moment , dj sets , live acts and music productions. I think most of the problems of the electronic scene is politic , laws..

When I will get more time , i’ld like to be part of our scene not only as an artist but also as someone creating projects and defending this scene

The best party you have played so far. And the worst night of your career?

Rex club his February was amazing , with Paul Ritch and Okain , it was 2 weeks ago so the moment is clear in my mind.

I miss Berghain so much  , classic answer but it’s so true ! They will be the Bpitch Control showcase the 6th July 2013 , i can’t wait , i think i’m gonna go to Berlin way before July !

Worse moment.. I managed to forget the worse moments.

Next clubs or festivals where we will see you play in the future?
